David Caruso wurde am 07. Januar 1956 in Forest Hills, New York geboren. Seine Eltern sind italienisch-irischer Abstammung. Den High School Abschluss machte David Caruso an der Archbishop Molloy High School in Briarwood, Queens, New York.
Seine Schauspielkarriere begann David Caruso zunächst mit kleinen Auftritten in Filmen wie z.B. Ein Offizier und Gentleman, spielte allerdings hauptsächlich in Nebenrollen bis er 1993 mit der Serie NYPD Blue den Durchbruch schaffte. Diese Serie verliess er schon kurz darauf wieder um sich seiner Filmkarriere zu widmen, womit er allerdings nur eher mässigen Erfolg hatte.
Zu internationaler Berühmtheit gelangte David Caruso erst durch seine Rolle des Lieutenant Horatio Caine in der TV-Serie CSI: Miami.
Neben der Schauspielerei ist David Caruso ausserdem Mitbesitzer eines Möbel- und Bekleidungsgeschäftes in Miami, Florida. Er war bisher schon drei mal verheiratet und hat 2 Kinder, eine Tochter namens Greta (geb. 01.06.1984) und einen Sohn namens Marquez Antonio (geb. 15.09.2005).
